Permanent
Funding Needed
for Harper's Hope

Josie Harper, the late wife of former ConAgra President Mike Harper, was a beloved wife and mother who lost her life to lung cancer.

A special gift from The Harper Family Foundation established Harper’s Hope to honor Josie and provide support services for cancer survivors in the Omaha community.

A permanent fund of $4.6 million is needed to give Harper’s Hope long-lasting financial stability, and to make it available for our entire Omaha community.

Josie Harper Hallways of Hope Dedication

On April 18, Methodist Estabrook Cancer Center and Methodist Hospital Foundation celebrated the dedication of the Josie Harper Hallways of Hope. This third floor addition was the result of a four year, $7 million capital campaign. The expansion was necessitated by the Cancer Center’s ever-increasing patient volumes. In the 13 years since the facility opened, nearly 17,000 new patients have been diagnosed and treated.

Methodist Estabrook Cancer Center remains the only comprehensive free-standing cancer facility in the area. Annually, the Cancer Center’s physicians treat more cases of breast, lung, prostate, colorectal, gynecological and head and neck cancer than any other hospital in the area.

Josie Abboud, service leader for Methodist Estabrook Cancer Center, hosted the event and recognized John W. Estabrook who led Methodist Hospital and Methodist Health System for 33 years. The Cancer Center was renamed Methodist Estabrook Cancer Center in his honor.

The third floor addition is named in memory of the late wife of Charles M. “Mike” Harper, former chairman of ConAgra. Mr. Harper and his daughters, Carolyn Harper and Betsy Murphy, and son-in-law Chris Murphy attended the dedication, along with The Harper Family Foundation’s Executive Director, Mary Robbins, and her husband Gary. Nearly 100 donors, physicians, staff and friends attended the event and toured the new addition following a short program.

Mr. Harper spoke about what cancer survivorship meant to him. “I don’t like the word ‘survivor.’ Many people have been down this path, and they’re in the fight of their lives. To them, I say: You’re a warrior – you’re going to win this fight.”

The Harper Family Foundation has also funded an important program for cancer patients called Harper’s Hope. This program provides social services, counseling, nutrition services, cancer prevention and physical wellness programs. Detailed information was available during the tours following the dedication, and can also be found online.
